Ringworm is not caused by a worm at all, but a fungus that belongs to the family of fungi known as dermatophytes. Dermatophytes are opportunistic, in that some thing has had to go wrong in the immune system and natural flora in the colon for them to attack the skin, scalp, groin area, toenails and fingernails. Children are mostly affected by ringworm. They can pick up in contact sports (skin-to skin) such as in football or wrestling, or from cats or dogs. Ringworm starts out with scratching, but the person can be contagious even before any symptoms appear. The skin looks just scaly at first, then the fungus spreads and forms a ring on the skin that is generally, very visible. This is why some people think that a worm causes ringworm. Fungi are ever present with us. The issue is this: what circumstances, or practices promote fungal infections? Children often contract ringworm after high sugar holidays, such as Halloween and Christmas. This is not an accident since fungi love to feed on sugar. Ringworm can also appear after antibiotic therapy when acidophilus There is a chemical, non-prescription chemical shampoo called Nizoral (ketoconazole) that kills the fungus that kills ringworm, but I prefer to mix 1/4 tsp. of grapefruit seed And I like to kill any fungus overgrowth internally with 1 odorless garlic tablet Instruct the person to keep their hands away from their eyes, or else they could lose their eyelashes and eyebrows. And tell them not to touch their groin or scratch their head without first washing their hands thoroughly. Ringworm is highly contagious and spreads easily. Examine the general health, or suspect vitamin deficiencies, if the person continues to be susceptible to ringworm or any other fungal infection. Special Alert: Lamisil, the popular antifungal medication has caused at least one man to die of a rare blood cancer from using Lamisil. This man was otherwise healthy, but his wife thought that he had contracted the flu. I think more people have to die before it is banned from the market. Any type of internal or external anti-fungal medication can cause liver failure, and liver cancer also. Be very careful with these types of medications. The jury is still out on these powerful chemicals and we don’t know their effect upon developing children or women of childbearing age. So proceed with great caution.
